The femur, is the longest, heaviest, and strongest bone in the entire human body. In the human body, all of the body’s weight is supported by the femurs which are located in the human thigh. The femur is classified as a long bone and extends from the hip down to the knee. The head of the femur articulates with the pelvis to form the hip joint. The neck is a narrow connection between the head of the femur and the diaphysis of it. The diaphysis is the shaft of the bone and the facet is the small smooth articular surface at the end of the femur. The femur is made up of spongy bone, compact bone, bone marrow, arteries, and veins. The femur bones are responsible for transmitting force from the tibia to the hip joint. The femur is a very important part of the skeletal system. When discovering the skeletal system and its interrelations you can learn a lot about the body. The human skeletal system consists of exactly 206 bones, it also contains tendons, ligaments, and cartilage that c onnects them together. The skeletal system performs vital functions such as support, movement, protection, blood cell production, calcium storage, and endocrine regulation. Infants are born with 270 bones, but some of them fuse together as the body develops. A bone in the skeletal system are typically dense and tough on the outside, like a compact bone.
