Work and College Admissions
Work and College Admissions May 12, 2012 Contrary to popular belief, summer employment can be beneficial to an applicant in the highly selective college admissions process. And so can conducting research (photo credit: Wouter van Erve). Work and college admissionsà success (as in employment during high school or over high school summers), contrary to popular belief, are not inversely related. Theres an all-too-common misconception out there that students should attend fancy, expensive summer programs to improve their odds of getting into highly selective colleges. This simply isnt true. Do you think that Harvard is going to admit your child because he attended a summer program? No. Theyll gladly take your money for the program but that doesnt mean that itll improve his odds of getting into the university when he applies. The fact is that expensive summer programs are entirely overrated and not necessary to gain admission to highly selective colleges. There are a number of things a high school student can do in lieu of going to a fancy summer program at a prestigious university. For instance, they can work. Maybe this means lifeguarding and saving lives. Maybe it means flipping burgers. Maybe it means starting an entrepreneurial endeavor that the student will continue even after the summer ends. Maybe it means doing science research and conducting experiments. Maybe it means researching the life and times of Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte. There are tons of options! The point is, parents, stop worrying about financing these expensive summer programs. Will your child learn some good things through these programs? Probably. But they can also learn some good things by reading a book in between shifts at a job over the summer. They can also learn some good things trying to start a business endeavor. They can also learn some good things right in their neighborhood. They dont have to spend the summer away from home! There are indeed other options.

Conflict Theory Most people become homeless due to circumstances that have overwhelmed them combined with hardly any family support structure. Interviewing Individuals with Intellectual Disability for Justice
Question: Discuss about theInterviewing Individuals with Intellectual Disability for Justice. Answer: Introduction In any justice proceeding, communication with the witnesses plays an essential role. With the development of the judicial system of all the nations from global perspectives, a major concern has been identified, which is communicating with witnesses or victims with intellectual disability. It has also been observed that individuals with intellectual disability exhibit complications associated with communication which is seen to further magnify during rigorous court room procedures. Considering the above mentioned aspect, the core emphasis of the essay would be on critically analyzing and proposing new piece of guidance for individuals with intellectual disabilities to communicate effective in court proceedings. On analyzing the issue of complications with effective communication on the part of the individuals with intellectual disabilities, it has been observed that the level of issues with communication process may vary from one individual to another. However, on highlighting upon the information of the various surveys conducted on the issue, it has been noticed that the percentage of population with intellectual disabilities having difficulty with communication varies from 78% to 89%. On the basis of the present data, the extent to which individuals with intellectual disability are suffering from the issue can be identified (Bull, 2010). However, these data fail to demonstrate the impact on the individuals who are facing the complication with effective communication. Hence, in order to further enhance the communication process with the individuals with intellectual disability, and provide with new guidelines associated with, it is essential to discuss and identify the impact on the indivi duals with intellectual disability on their communication process. In the process of interviewing individuals with intellectual disability there are various factors associated which such condition that impacts the communication process of these individuals which are required to be perceived on the part of interviewer. Among the various factors, the core emphasis will be given on physical, sensory and intellectual factors (Cambridge, Forrester-Jones, 2007). In this context it is mentionable here that intellectual factors and its development is deeply intermingled with the enhancement of communication skills. It has been observed that enhanced level of intellectual ability makes it easy on the part of the individuals to learn language and have enhanced level of language skills as a result of which the capability to deal with tasks requiring higher level of intellectual capability also enhances. Thus, having limited intellectual ability is observed to restrict the ability of learning language on the part of those individuals which in turn results in i ssues with intellectual enhancement which is observed to be particularly relevant in case short term memory [STM]. Phonological loop, an aspect of STM when gets affected process of verbal material also gets impacted adversely impacting the verbal communication (Milne Bull, 2007). In addition to the above mentioned aspect, due to the issue associated with intellectual factor associated with intellectual disability, other than the impact of language, non-verbal communication also gets affected. Here, it is mentionable that, in the process of communication elements like ostention, context and relevance is required which gets affected in case of impaired intellectual disability. Another essential aspect in this context is sensory impairment which impacts the communication that includes both hearing and visual complications. In case of individuals experiencing sensory impairment, sensory loss is associated with the condition. Visual impairment from a segregated sense does not have any long term impact on the communication process, however, when it gets associated with hearing impairment along with intellectual disability, it becomes further complicated (Jenkins, 2007). Hearing impairment is directly associated with communication complications. It has been further observed that 60% of the individuals with intellectual disability suffer from hearing loss. This is applicable in case of visual problems. In a forensic situation such complication has actual implications for witnessed events. In terms of physical factors associated with intellectual disability, it is mentionable that it is broader as compared to simple controlling different parts body parts associated with communication. In this context it can be stated that individuals with limited ability of movement will have limited knowledge of the world which also hinders the communication process (Fisher, 2010). Thus the above made discussion clearly reflects the various impacts of physical, intellectual and sensory factors associated with intellectual disability that affects the communication process adversely. In order to enhance the commutation process, implement appropriate strategies for the intellectually challenged individuals and ascertain involvement from legal context there are two essential aspects associated with it which are required to be highlighted, that includes stages and sequences of typical development and the factors that impacts enhancement of communication process and makes it a success. Considering the above two aspects, one of prime necessity in order to enhance health literacy. The reason being, individuals having intellectual disabilities are observed to have limited health literacy (Cederborg Lamb, 2008). With the help of enhanced the level of health literacy of the individuals with intellectual disability, the ability of the patient to understand and read health information, engagement with the healthcare services and barriers associated with it can be eliminated. Similarly, in case of individuals using pre-symbolic communication, it is required to be perceived on the part of the interviewers those individuals will not be able to use or understand symbolic forms of communication like pictures, speech or signs. The section of people is highly dependent and relies on individuals surrounding them to interpret the facial expressions, vocalizations and body language (Gudjonsson Pearse, 2011). Thus, on the part of the interviewers, they are required to emphasize on the importance of presence of familiar individuals of the intellectually disabled individuals and communicate in their presence. They are also required to look into their way of approaching and focus on body language and facial expression in the process of communicating with them, which would make the process effective in nature. In the process of interviewing them symbolic communication is also required to be highlighted as, approximately 60% of the individuals with intellectual disabilities are capable of using symbolic methods of communication which includes symbols, pictures, signs or speech for the purpose of communication. With the help of using this technique, the victims/witnesses who are experiencing intellectual disability may be made to respond to such pictorial narrations. In addition to the above mentioned aspect, the interviewers are required to look into effective verbal communication. The reason being, in most cases of intellectual disabilities, they are observed to have mild disabilities associated with communication skills (Cederborg Lamb, 2008). Herein, the interviewer are required to fragment the information, for it to be easily comprehendible on the part of the individual with such condition along with the use of sign language, pictorial expression of the communication can be effective strategy to communication with them which would help in effective communication on the part of the individuals. In addition to the above mentioned aspect, on the part of the interviewer, the techniques associated with pragmatics is required to be implemented which would help enhancing the communication skills of the interviewer in a way to engage the victim/ witness with intellectual disabilities. It enhances the skills associated with communication pattern, th e way it is used to convey information. Other than the above mentioned aspect, there are certain other strategies which are required to be implemented on the part interviewers to ensure integration and effective communication of the individuals with intellectual disability (Boardman, Bernal and Hollins, 2014). One of such mentionable technique is easy availability of pictorial leaflets and picture books. With the help of presentation of visual information, as compared to auditory information, they can be disseminated with effective information. In this particular strategy, drawings, pictures will require to be integrated which would help in disseminating information in an effective manner. The interviewers can also integrate talking mats with the help of the views and opinions of the victims/witnesses can be recorded on the basis of which the judicial decision making can be effective made. Similarly, with the help of beyond words strategy, individuals who are unable to read, they can be communicated with the scenarios and their opinion can be collected. With the help of implementation of the above mentioned aspects Section 53 of Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 can be effectively complied which states that at every stage associated with criminal proceeding all the individuals are capable to provide with evidence. The section further states that conditions must be formulated wherein they are able to perceive the question stated to them and provide answer to it. Thus with the help of the above mentioned strategy it can be complied (Macpherson, 2007). Other than that, equality for all can be ensured upholding the judicial effectiveness and supremacy is another major advantage associated with it. However, in the process of applying these strategies the legislative procedure may get complicated that may adversely impact the judicial proceeding. In order to make the judicial proceeding associated with vulnerable witnesses, various legislation has been formulated. One of such mentionable legislation is Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 which provided with special measures in order to make provide vulnerable witnesses with required support during the legal process. Under the particular legislation, Section 23 Screening Witness from Accused have been implemented as a procedural requirement for witnesses under Section 16 (children, vulnerable adults) and Section 17 (distressed or intimidated witnesses). Another mentionable procedural requirement for vulnerable witnesses has been formulated under Section 24 of the legislation requiring evidence by live link. With the help of this procedural requirement, the vulnerable witnesses are entitled to provide with evidence in a distance location from the actual courtroom. Under Section 25 of the legislation Evidence given in private has been formulated that are required in cases involving sexual offences. Under the provision, all the press members and public are removed from the court, whereas only parties associated with court process remains within the court (Legislation.gov.uk, 2017). Section 26 of the legislation requires Removal of wigs and gowns in the process of vulnerable individuals providing with their witnesses. Similarly, Section 27 of the legislation puts forward the requirement for video recorded interview. This helps in protecting the vulnerable witnesses and safeguarding them from hassle associated with court room procedure a nd minimizes the intimidation associated with it. Under Section 28 of the legislation Video recorded cross examination has been proposed which not only helps in determining the authentication of the witness but also helps in understanding if coercion has been implemented. Section 29 emphasizes on Examination of Witness trough an intermediately which acts as a contributing factor for the witnesses vulnerable in nature to convey the entire incident (eradar.eu, 2017). Section 30 of the legislation emphasizes in providing with Aids to communication for the vulnerable witness which is highly beneficial for witnesses having communication issues and optimizes there scope of providing evidence with the help of communication aid. In the process of interviewing individuals vulnerable in nature, there are certain skills required on the part of the interviewer. One of such essential skill required on the part of interviewer is communication skill. To get in depth of the matter, the interviewer is required to have the skill to simplify the language. It is essential for the interviewer, which interviewing individuals vulnerable in nature particularly having intellectual disability to have skills associated with supplementary modes of communication which includes knowledge associated with symbols, signs, gestures (Newburn et al., 2012).. The interviewer is also required to learn to perceive unconventional communication pattern of the interviewee. It is important for the interviewer, in such cases to understand the importance of time. In other words, interviewers are required to provide the interviewee with required time to respond which would help in making the communication process effective and fruitful. The inte rviewers are also required to have language skills wherein, in the communication process the interviewer are required to incorporate expressive language in which the interviewer can incorporate video or audio recording for the purpose of translation of the information making it easy for the interviewee to comprehend the conveyed information. The interviewer is also have comprehensive skills which helps them determine the about of information they want to provide, so that the interviewee can understand the conveyed information which helps it easy for them to comprehend and answer effectively (Newburn et al., 2012). The interviewer is also required to have skills associated with assessing communication, which would help in making the communication process effective in nature. Herein, the interviewer is required to look into observation, interaction and asking other which would help in getting an insight to the communication process and develop it further. Having effective assessing sk ills would also help the interviewer to look into language skills, phonological skills, communication competencies, on the basis of which the communication process can be further enhanced by the interviewer and help in attaining the required information. In the above made discussion the legislation associated with vulnerable witness have been discussed i.e. special measures under Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999. There are certain usefulness associated with such legislation that helps in making the communication process in the court processing effective in nature (Macpherson, 2007). Under Section 24 the provision of evidence by live link has been formulated. The main advantage associated with the process is it helps in minimizing the stress on the vulnerable witnesses associated with cross-examination. However, the major issue associated with this provision is defendant is having the scope to see the witness which in cases involving criminal trials intimidates the witness and risks their security (Legislation.gov.uk, 2017). The purpose of formulating Section 25 Evidence given in private and Section 26 Removal of wigs and gowns had the similar intention. Similarly under the provision of Section 27, video recorded interview the main purpose was minimizing of intimidation on the part of the witnesses vulnerable in nature. However the main concern associated with the provision is it is exposed to the risks associated with technical problems. Section 29 which stated Examination of Witness trough an intermediately as a requirement in court proceeding, the major advantage associated with its use is perceived enhancement in the skills of the part of the vulnerable individuals. However, the major issues identified to be associated with it is, lack of training on the part of the police and the use of intermediately is applicable in different stages of criminal proceeding which may be different as a result of which the processing may be adversely impacted. Similarly, under Section 30 of the legislation Aids to communication have been formulated the major advantage associated with it is it helps witnesses with communication difficulties to communicate effective and provide with witnesses with the help of commun ication aid (Burton et al., 2007). However, the major issue with the provision is it is not very effective in providing support to witnesses who are children. Hence, it can be noticed that though the legislations have been formulated to support vulnerable witnesses, there are certain flaws associated with it which are required to be addressed. Conclusion Thus on the basis of the above made discussion it can be observed that individual intellectually disabled who are associated with judicial proceeding is a complex and delicate matter, which is required to be dealt with optimum level of concern. This requires skills on the part of interviewer, effective application of the legislation and awareness regarding the issue which would help in making this court proceeding effective in nature. Vietnamese Immigrant to the United States
Background to the war Immigration Up to today, many Americans look back to the effects of the Vietnam War with much disappointment and disgust for the terrible pain performed to ââ¬Ëprotectââ¬â¢ the people of the South Vietnam from the dictatorial government. While many might still argue that the war was a matter of necessity led by outstanding intentions, others certainly consider it as a sin and a blunder that can never be justified.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Vietnamese Immigrant to the United States specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The war remains the most detested and the most prolonged war that the Americans have ever engaged. It resulted to the demise of more than 200000 Vietnamese and to the deaths of over 60,000 Americans (Gibson 67). The first mistake that the Americans made before launching the war was to underestimate the potential of the North Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese had a long and strong experience in war through the prolonged resistance to the French. They had a stronger advantage to utilize their strong rebellions against the South who were viewed as the representatives of the French. The North Vietnamese had a strong bond and unity to rebel against the South Vietnam Catholic Leaders who were viewed as representatives of the west (Shelby 69). First, among the major inspiration and the motivation of the Americans to launch the Vietnam War, was the strong fear during the cold war that the crossover of South Vietnam to the Communist ideologies would lead to a weaker United State and a down fall of key US leaders such as President Kennedy and Johnson. To President Kennedy and Johnson, their chances of winning the next term in office depended on the successful launch of US capitalist ideologies in South Vietnam. In addition to the overconfidence in the US military capacity in preventing the North from taking over the South, there was a misguided belie f that North Vietnam was a hock belonging to Moscow. Still, other factors such as the massive destruction of Cuba and Sovietââ¬â¢s leader Nikita Khrushchev threat to sponsor National Liberation Movements everywhere in the world put the US under pressure to launch a war in Vietnam.Advertising Looking for research paper on history? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More While the Vietnam War was accelerated by deep rooted political meanness and cruelty, the fact remains that its consequences were destructive and led to lifelong hatred towards the American government. For many Vietnamese, their lifelong experiences and struggle as immigrants in the American soil is an as a result of the selfishness and the over calculated pride of the American people. In addition to broken families and ties, the war launched in 1961 has led many desperate lives today in a foreign land with barely anywhere to call home. Vietnamese Immigrant experience While speaking as an outsider can never bring out the real picture of what the Vietnamese experienced during and after the war, their narrations still linger from the foreign land that they can never truly call their own (Coleman 47). America remains their land of escape, the land where after all turmoil and trauma, much rest, survival and a source of livelihood for them was found. On the other hand, Vietnam remains their country where all their birth rites and roots come from and the country where they were born. Looking at it from the eyes of an Immigrant, before the war broke out in May 1961, everything in the Vietnamese Immigrants lives was as usual. However, the events that happened after the war remain unforgettable in their lives. The economy of their country was driven into downfall. The war led them into hiding in safe refuges and subsequently led them into their escape into the American soil 15 years after the war had broke. Their worst feeling was brought by the percepti on of being intruders and Immigrants by the natives in the foreign land they had sought safety (Shelby 34). According to natives, the Immigrants were less human and deserved less; these refugees were devoid of any merit. In addition to discrimination and dislike by the natives, the Vietnamese had a second challenge; the challenge of being in a foreign land with a language they could not speak or hear. Amidst mush discrimination and the reality of a language they did not understand, the Immigrants biggest challenge was the lack of skills to perform jobs in America. Without skill, they could not get employed and earn a livelihood in the new land.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Vietnamese Immigrant to the United States specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In those darkest moments, every Immigrant hang-on the little hope they could find. To them, the hope of a brighter future came from the few people who seeme d to show some little concern to them as human beings rather than as refugees who were less human. Their first source of life came from the volunteers who appeared on the street when the war broke to lead people to safety refuges (Coleman 19). Though life in the refuge was not the best, and at times, they could lack food, the refuge came with the much safety that they needed. They felt calm in the midst of society turmoil and chaos. The second source of hope to the Immigrants came at a needed time in the midst of darkness in a foreign land. It came to their rescue when they faced discrimination for being Immigrants. Upon their departure towards the base in Guam and eventually their deliverance to a refugee center, the Immigrants got rescue from the good will of the former president. The former President Gerald Ford supported the immigration into the U.S. He passed the Immigrants to enter the United States under a special status. This formed a substantial basement for them to start a new life in the United States. For their final settlement in America, the Immigrants desire to start a new life got fulfilled by a voluntary agency whose responsibility was to help the refugee resettle into communities throughout the United Stated eventually by providing the Immigrants with food, water, and clothing. The Immigrants memory of their past can never fade. However, with time, they accepted reality and began to settle down in America (Shelby 22). They have been able to learn English and acquire jobs that can sustain their lives. Though the Immigrants have religiously preserved their beliefs and held on to the core of their cultures, with time they have adopted the American ways of life as a way of assimilating into the new land.Advertising Looking for research paper on history? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In regards to their children, apart from the challenge they often face in discrimination because they are of Asian origin, their children have not faced considerable challenges such as learning English majorly because they were born in America. The children have adopted a strong value system in education, and a rapidly growing proportion of them are now studying at University of California, Berkeley, and there is much hope that the children occupy better professional positions in society, more so in the high-tech technology and in locations such as Silicon Valley. Immigrants Point of views for Vietnam War While many may view war as merely an extension of politics by non-peaceful means, the Vietnamese experience have much wisdom for the many who hold onto their pride and risk the lives of millions in order to achieve their personal desires. According to the Immigrants, there can never be anything substantial that comes from war. As stated earlier, the Vietnam War led to over 60000 Am erican deaths and over 200,000 Vietnamese deaths. This is just a reflection of death and destruction that wars have caused all over the world. Listening to the words of wisdom from the Immigrants experience, the massive destruction of war is not worth it. War leads to the loss of family and friends. Individuals get separated from their loved ones, and they live in a foreign land with no relatives and friends. In addition, the immigrants feel that the war led them into much undeserved discrimination. In the foreign land, they escaped into, people viewed them with disownment and pressured them into mean experiences. The immigrants feel that they have not lived their real lives, all because of the Vietnam War that robbed off everything they had and drove them into an unknown land. Famous people in the Vietnam immigrants The Immigrants have come as a source of blessing in adding value to the to the Americans land. Though their contributions remain unnoticed, many Vietnamese Immigrants h ave worked hard to climb the corporate radar and currently hold key positions in America many have taken a profound interest in civic duty. John Quoc Duong was an example of the hardworking persistent Vietnamese who have added much value to Americaââ¬â¢s Public Service. While President George Bush was in office, John Quoc Duong served as an executive director of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Michael 123). Far from the government, the Vietnamese have had a significant contribution in the growth of economy through the athletic and the entertainment industry. In the face of much economic recession, there is an increase of the Vietnamese Immigrants into America as many come to get reunited with the family members who they lost during the war. Immigrants comparison of Vietnam and America From the immigrantsââ¬â¢ experience, there can never be a similarity of Vietnam and America. From their experiences, they have always longed for their lives i n Vietnam. Despite what the foreign land they live in offers, they live in the hope that one day they will be able to go back to their relatives and their real hometown. A significant difference separating the two towns lies in the weather. There is some calm and coolness in America that makes the Immigrants forget home for a while, Taiwan like Vietnam, on the other hand, is full of much heat during the summer. People in Taiwan are also totally different. The simplicity and easiness in the lives is welcoming as compared to the busy America. Life in Taiwan is cheaper compared to life in the US and in fact, food and shopping go for a cheap price (Galloway 45). Population In terms of the population, recent Census revealed that over 1,122,528 individuals identify themselves as Vietnamese alone or 1,223,736 in combinations with other ethnicities (ââ¬Å"Wikipedia: Vietnamese Americaâ⬠par. 3). As a result of this figure, they got ranked fourth among the Asian American groups. Accord ing to relevant sources, 447,032 (39.8%) live in California and 134,961 (12.0%) in Texas. The highest figure of this population outside its country of origin is in Orange County, California with approximately 135,548 Vietnamese (ââ¬Å"Wikipedia: Vietnamese Americaâ⬠par. 3). Together with this, there is a rapid increase in Vietnamese populations in some states such as Florida, Virginia and Massachusetts. Conclusions While many people in the world live their lives as Immigrants, from the experiences of the Vietnamese Immigrants it is safe to say that life as an Immigrant is among the hardest lives for any human being. Apart from dealing with the discriminations that comes by being different in other peopleââ¬â¢s land, the major challenges that the immigrants face is the challenge of having to adapt to a new environment. Leaving oneââ¬â¢s life behind and moving on in complete emptiness of what ones used to be your life. Adopting to a new culture and a new language with new people pushes many into a state of depression and denial and as witnessed in the Immigrants case, only a few genuinely thrive to survive. On the other hand, there are many lessons to be learnt by the leaders of this world. For one, war is just an unnecessary evil that should never happen. There is too much to life for us to be driven by greed to permanent destruction of other peopleââ¬â¢s life. There is so much in togetherness and a personââ¬â¢s family and friends. Free Essays on Ravers Degeneration X: The Artifacts and Lexicon of the Rave Subculture The dizzying laser lights flashed in synchronicity with the pulsating bass of the music that bounced off the psychedelic warehouse walls. As my boyfriend and I mentally attempted to organize the chaos surrounding us, we pushed our way through the crowd of spasmodic lunatics who contorted their bodies in time with the music and lights. We located a couch in a room covered with cartoonesque, hyper-graphic graffiti. An androgynous man sat himself at my feet and began massaging my thighs, while a girl with her eyes rolled back into her head demanded that my boyfriend give her a massage. Just then the deejay laid his head in my lap, told me he was in love with me, and placed a bitter pill on my tongue. This certainly was the most bizarre method of earning three graduate credit hours I could imagine. So began my two-year ethnography on the American rave subculture. The scene described above was my initiation into the underground subculture where rave kids, typically under twenty-one years old, are given secret invitations to attend private warehouse parties with dancing, drugs, and thousands of their closest friends. Because of my youthful and unorthodox appearance, I was invited to join the then-highly-exclusive underground scene and attended numerous raves in several major cities in North Carolina. Although my chosen subculture was not typically examined by academia, I conducted an academic ethnography of what Maton (1993) describes as a "group whose world views, values and practices diverge from mainstream North American and social science cultures" (747). As a result, I received three graduate credit hours for "supervised research in ethnography" and conducted what may be the only academic ethnography on raves. The American rave subculture is an alternative, underground nightclub movement promoting techno music, synthetic drugs, and teen angst: the discos of the 1990s....

Professionalism in Nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Professionalism in Nursing - Essay Example Professional code of ethics in nursing dictates that practitioners should not hide any important information to their clients since such actions may result in adverse consequences. For instance, the client can decline to seek medical attention in the same premises citing unprofessional handling of her case. For this reason, the Doctor could have engaged in a direct communication with the patient since health is a serious issue. On the other hand, the Doctor's actions could also imply that he was hiding information from the client. To avoid ethical or moral concerns, healthcare services should entitle patients to full disclosure of their health information with adequate supportive information. Upholding professionalism not only concerns reactions from the customers but also is also an important implication to the practitioner himself. When handling, the patientââ¬â¢s situation about the Actinic Keratosis disease, it would have been imperative for the Doctor to consider implications of his actions. Maybe his actions could have attracted strict actions from the executive management due to the customer's complaints. In such a scenario, a healthcare practitioner should also consider that professionalism concerns security of their jobs or careers. It is unprofessional to harm or endanger the life of a patient as with the case of the Doctor hiding relevant information about a precancerous situation. The problem arises when the doctor instructs his patient to go through the educative material herself without guidance.

Solectrica car as a New Product Development Essay
Solectrica car as a New Product Development - Essay Example The market industry is indicated by a well-documented five forces analysis that well states the position of the company. The marketing development is described by the marketing mix policies that define the segmentation of the car. This leads to the required launch of the car in the effective UK and EU market. Solectrica car is a new brand of cars from Pessan Motors Ltd. This is a car that develops sufficient use of energy as different governments strive to reduce the rates of pollution to the environment. Industrialized countries have increasingly polluted the environment and with time, there is bound to be less sustainability to the environmental issues that are coming up (FÃ ±rat, 2013). There has therefore been a constant call to shift to energy saving machines especially the machines that are continuously done. Factual information shows that a single car generates half a ton of carbon dioxide within a very short time span. It is also estimated that there are 500 million cars in the world. The number is bound to double to more than a billion by 2030. This also means double pollution. There is rampant knowledge about use of environmentally friendly cars in the UK and therefore sensitization about the need to generate this type of car to capture this rapidly growing market. Solectrica cars are supposed to aim for this high reduction and there is even hope that some governments will effectively create regulations that will reduce manufacture of cars that are either using solar power or electric energy.Ã

The Glass Menagerie Essay Example for Free
The Glass Menagerie Essay Throughout ââ¬Å"The Glass Menagerieâ⬠Tennessee Williams creates an intricate dynamic between the three main characters, as well as symbols and symbolic language in order to exemplify the fragility of livelihood. Without a single one of the members of the Wingfield family the otherââ¬â¢s lives would be dramatically different. Much as the collection of glass menagerie would not be the same collection without one of its pieces. As many collectors know the presence or absence of one item can drastically change the value of the whole collection. So also is a family unit, as one member affects the others, they form an identity they become accustomed to and often cling to. Amanda exemplifies how vital it is that a family unit stay loyal. After Mr. Wingfield disappeared her life has become a constant struggle in order to survive, a far cry from the Blue Mountain setting she idolizes in her past. Amanda symbolizes a downfall, but she also symbolizes drive for her children, encouraging Laura to blossom into something that they can both be proud of and encouraging Tom to keep his job and support his family until they can fend for themselves at least. Laura symbolizes fear and instability through the first five acts. She failed out of her class, that was a hope for a better future, because of her fear and doesnââ¬â¢t let herself actually try to engage in social interactions for fear that she will be inadequate in anotherââ¬â¢s eyes. Without Laura to feel sorry for and take care of Tom most likely would have left Amanda on her own in Mr. Wingfieldââ¬â¢s footsteps a long time ago. Tom represents unrest and boredom, but he also provides the money and stability for the family to keep living in its present state. Though Tom is uneasy he still gets up in the morning and performs his duties knowing that he is a key member of their family unit, or the most valuable piece in the collection. When Tom and Amandaââ¬â¢s fight breaks some of the pieces of the Glass menagerie it symbolizes the breaking of a family unit, making it less valuable. As the pieces are easy to break so is the bond that holds theà family together as Mr. Wingfield showed how easy it was to separate this bond. As Tom distances himself the strength of the bond becomes less and less strong and it is only a matter of time before it breaks if it is not mended.

Measuring the Cost of Living - The Impact of Technology on our Standard
Measuring the Cost of Living - The Impact of Technology on our Standard of Living Measures of the cost of living, like the retail price index (RPI), are inadequate, failing to reflect fully the impact of technological advances on our standard of living. This leads to a substantial upward bias in our estimates of inflation, perhaps as much as 1.6% a year. That is the contention of Professor William Nordhaus of Yale University. If he is right, then we may have to rewrite history: l Increases in the price of lighting services since 1830 may have been overestimated by as much as a thousandfold! l US real wage growth between 1959-95, currently measured at a very modest 10%, should be revised to a healthier 70%. l And estimated average annual rates of US productivity growth of 0.6% between 1973-95 should nearly be tripled. Nordhaus notes that consumer price indices like the RPI are some of the most important measurements generated by economists and statisticians. Ideally, they are designed to measure the cost of attaining a given level of economic well-being. In practice, statisticians take a ââ¬Ëbasket of goodsââ¬â¢, which represents the consumption patterns of the ââ¬Ëaverage consumerââ¬â¢, and measure how the cost of this fixed basket changes over time. This statistic is used to define ââ¬Ëinflationââ¬â¢, and hence determines changes in a wide range of inflation-indexed state payments and benefits, as well as setting the background for pay settlements. It is also crucial for measuring the real growth of the economy, a key statistic in assessing the economic and political performance of the economy and government policies. Nordhaus argues that the current methods for measuring the cost of living are inadequate and fail to refl... ...s and output. Over the period 1959-95, the increase in real wages is currently measured at a very modest 10%: it should be revised to a healthier 70%. Estimates of productivity growth over the period 1973-95 indicate an average annual rate of 0.6%: this should nearly be tripled. ââ¬ËThe fact that we may be getting such an important statistic as the RPI wrong by so much indicates that we really need to look again at the way it is calculated in the UKââ¬â¢, claims Professor Huw Dixon of the University of York and CEPR. ââ¬ËSince so much depends on the inflation rate measure, we need to make sure we are getting it rightââ¬â¢. Note: ââ¬Ëââ¬ËTraditional Productivity Estimates are Asleep at the Technological Switchââ¬â¢ by William B. Nordhaus is published in the Controversy section of the Autumn 1997 issue of the Economic Journal. Nordhaus is Professor of Economics at Yale University.

Health Psychology Essay
In this assignment I will be explain two different health psychology issues and explaining them. The two different issues I have decided to talk about are eating disorders and childbirth. I will then compare the two health psychology issues in relation to their common themes and also their different. P3 Explain specific health psychology issues. Using two health psychology issues of interest to you, you should explain the specific issue in detail Eating Disorders (anorexia and bulimia) Anorexia and bulimia are caused through psychological issues. Eating disorders are known by an unusual attitude towards food that causes someone to change their eating habits and behaviour and also their image. An individual with an eating disorder will focus on their getting their weight, shape, size down to the least they can, and also change the way they look. This causes them to make unhealthy choices about eating which then causes damage to their health and other things. Around one in 250 women will experience anorexia at some point in their lives, and the condition usually starts around the age 16/17. This is because at this age girls want people to like them and boys to start being attracted to them, so they feel the need to become skinny and different. Also a lot of celebrities battle with the weight and some have become anorexia so teenage girls donââ¬â¢t see anything wrong with it. Sometimes there are biological and other things influencing someone to have an eating disorder. They are often responsible because of the pressure from friends and the media to be thin, as a lot of young girls feel they should look a certain way to be popular and for boys to notice them. The consequences from an eating disorder can be more serious than the way someone looks. Spotting that a person has an eating disorder can be very difficult to see, especially if it is someone close to yourself. If an eating disorder is not spotted and treat it can have a major impact on someoneââ¬â¢s life. It can effect someoneââ¬â¢s job or schoolwork, and can also break up relationship with family and friends. The effects of an eating disorder can sometimes be fatal. To treat an eating disorder and recovering from one can take a long time. To treat a disorder usually involves monitoring a individuals physical health and helping them deal with psychological problem. It is important for friends and family to be there for the individual and help them believe they can get better with time and support from the loved ones. Examples of treatment could be cognitive behaviour therapy also known as CBT, another method is interpersonal psychotherapy, dietary counselling and also medication. Psychological Causes of Obesity Many people today eat when their emotionally such as because the person is bored, sad, anger or even happy. Obesity can be caused by things like stress or depression and can cause a number of different health implications. For example a person that is obese is more likely to have diabetes later in life and also suffer heart problems. Over 30% of todayââ¬â¢s population seek treatment for weight problems and this is all caused through binge eating. Binge eating is when someone eats large amount of food while feeling they canââ¬â¢t control how much they are eating, people who seriously binge and a very obese develop a disorder call binge eating disorder. The people with this kind of eating disorder find it difficult to lose weight and also find it difficult to control how much they are eating. Many people may need serious help for example counselling or medication or even operation to make the stomach smaller to help there binge eating addiction. Childbirth Childbirth today is most likely in the hospital and a team of midwifes help delivery the baby, in todayââ¬â¢s society childbirth is very all to do with the medication given. Epidurals are the most common drug used in childbirth, and are used for over half of all child birthday in hospitals. An epidural interferes with normal bio-feedback between the pelvic muscles and the motherââ¬â¢s brain during labour. The drug slows down the labour, which can cause some serious things happen during giving birth. Things such as making the mother three times more likely to be given a drip, and it can also double the chances of the mother having to have a caesarean. There are different side effects when using an epidural such as a drop in the motherââ¬â¢s blood pressure leading to lack of oxygen for the baby. When an epidural is given, the baby can have some difficulties with taking the milk from the mother and maybe some behaviour problems. Home births are now a very rare thing and can only go forward if the midwife says it can, and can only occur if the babyââ¬â¢s head is upside down. There can be risks and benefits to having a home birth, these are: previous difficultly giving birth or heavy bleeding after the birth, previous c section, raised blood pressure and finally anaemia. There are many different cultural and religious views of childbirth. Caesarean section rates have been increasing due to higher number of caesarean section for the babyââ¬â¢s sake, and keeping the baby from getting upset and distressed through labour. Water births are a nice way for women to give birth, this is because water is an effective pain relief in labour. When women are having a water birth warm water is usually used to help the woman unwind and relax, it eases aches and pain. More woman are choosing to have a water birth, and women who have impaired mobility may find giving birth in water helpful rather than in the hospital. The culture which the mother of the baby has been brought up in always plays a big part of how women deal with their pregnancy and labour. Some Christians believe that the labour pain can be seen as ââ¬Ëthe way God intended it to beââ¬â¢. This is something strong Christians believe and will go through labour with no pain relief, this may inspire some women who are not Christian to go through without pain relief and give a natural birth. In cultures such as Japan, the woman must not express much distress through labour, she has to be seen very calm and composed. In the Middle East and Mediterranean area women are expected to scream and cry uncontrollably in the childbirth. The woman of the east doesnââ¬â¢t always use pain relief, the screaming and crying throughout labour is to express her labour pain and message to her support people that she needs loving and sympathy. The Western are often see labour pain as something to be fixed or stopped, in some cases the western turn to medical resources to relief the pain of labour with gas and air, and maybe an epidural. Now woman a trying to use natural therapies to minimise using pain relief.
